The cinema at St Albans, Vermont was built as a jail.

The projection booths are where most of what is reported happens. Films have started by themselves, and voices are heard in the old booths.

The basement has its own accounts, and it is the part of the building that has changed least.

A jail converted into a cinema is a good example of how thoroughly American towns reuse their buildings. The walls that held prisoners now hold an audience, and the only people who spend real time alone in it are the projectionists, several floors up in a small room, which is where the reports come from.

St Albans is close enough to the Canadian border that it was raided from Canada by Confederate soldiers in 1864, the northernmost land action of the Civil War, and the men involved were held in Vermont before being sent north.

The theatre is open.
