Strong Hall, the women's residence at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, is associated with a student called Sophie, said to have been among the first women admitted to the university.

The tradition is precise. She appears in the lobby mirror once a year, on her birthday.

Students report noises at night, and the character attributed to her is that of a chaperone: she is said to disapprove strongly of what goes on in a modern hall of residence and to make her feelings known.

That is entirely in keeping with the period. The first women at American universities were supervised to a degree that is hard to imagine now, precisely so that nobody could argue their presence was improper.

The original Strong Hall has since been replaced by a new building of the same name.
