The Turner Fine Arts Auditorium on the Stephen F Austin University campus in Nacogdoches, Texas has a presence students call Chester, and two competing accounts of who he was.

The first, and the one that gives the story its edge, holds that he was the architect, and that he died before the building was completed. Attached to it is a claim that the blueprints were misinterpreted after his death and that the building was put up backwards. Anyone who has been inside can decide for themselves how plausible that looks.

The second holds that Chester was a drama student.

He has been seen as a face on a stage curtain. The account students repeat most often is from the 1960s, when he appeared onstage during a performance as an additional ghost in a play that already had one.

Cold spots and noises make up the rest of the reports, and they come from the parts of the building students occupy at night.

An architect who did not live to see his building finished is a good enough story that it would survive whether or not anyone ever saw anything.
