This bar at Colorado Springs stands beside a building that was once a mortuary, and during major epidemics the bodies were stored in the basement of what is now the bar, in the back area the staff call the Pit.

An undertaker needing overflow space during an epidemic is not a legend. Influenza in 1918, and diphtheria and typhoid before it, produced more dead in a week than any small city's mortuary could handle, and premises were borrowed wherever they could be found.

Colorado Springs also filled up with tuberculosis patients who came for the dry air and the altitude, and a great many of them died here.

The locked storeroom is the useful detail. Damage inside a locked room narrows the list of people who could have caused it.
