The building began as a stone manor house in Elmhurst, Illinois, and has since been a speakeasy called Spaso and a pizzeria. The oldest part of the story concerns the woman who owned it, who is said to have hanged herself in the attic. That attic is now office and storage space for whichever business occupies the building.

The complaint staff repeat most often is small and stubborn. A pull chain light switch sits at the top of the basement stairs. Turn it on, go back down to finish what you were doing, and the chain gets pulled and the light goes out, leaving you to find the steps in the dark. It has happened often enough that employees simply leave the lower light burning.

One incident was more serious than atmospheric. Staff setting up before opening at the speakeasy began falling ill, and the cause turned out to be gas: the supply to the converted fireplaces had been opened but never lit. The building also holds panels and spaces behind the walls, which has done nothing to quiet the stories.
