The old hospital at Fort Carson, Colorado and the buildings around it went up around 1941, in the months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the war the post held a large number of German and Italian prisoners of war.

An intricate system of tunnels links the buildings together, and the account that keeps this site on record comes from one of them.

A military policeman investigating an open door one night followed the tunnel a considerable distance in. What he found down there was a set of children's things: a small chair, a small table, a few other items, arranged as though in use. Nobody has explained what they were doing in a service tunnel beneath a military hospital.

This is an active army installation and the tunnels are not accessible. The reports come from the people whose job is to walk the post at night, which is as close to a professional witness as this archive gets.
