The Blakney House

The old Blakney House stands on Franklin Street in Monroe, North Carolina. The presence local tradition names is William Blakney himself, described as a greedy miser, and the reason given for his staying is that his fortune is still concealed somewhere in the building.

A second account attaches to a girl, possibly a relative, who is said to have watched her parents run over from an upstairs window.

The house was renovated and remodelled around fifteen years before this account was collected, to hold a privately owned restaurant. Before the work, neighbourhood children were warned to keep away from it, though as the original submitter fairly notes, that may have been adults discouraging trespassing rather than anything more.

The reports began once the restaurant opened and came from employees, which is the pattern at a great many converted houses: an empty building generates rumours, and a staffed one generates accounts. The hidden fortune has never been found, and by now the search for it has probably done the house more damage than any ghost.
