The house at Centerville, Louisiana was built in the early 1800s, and it was the centre of a working sugar plantation. That word carries the whole of what needs saying: this place existed because people were owned, and the wealth in it was taken from them.

Two are reported here.

One is Addie E Harris, whose parents owned the house. It was given to her husband James Stirling Hereford as a wedding dowry two years before she died in childbirth in 1876, still very young. Death in childbirth was the leading cause of death for women of her age and class as much as any other.

The other is a Black man, unidentified, who has appeared in photographs taken at the house.

That he is unnamed while she is named is the plantation's whole history in a single line, and it is worth sitting with rather than explaining away.
