Before the high school at Stoneham, Massachusetts was built, the land was woods, part of a farm.

There was a tree there that a girl called Lucy played on every day. Her parents hung a swing from it for her, and she used it daily.

One day there was a storm.

She was eight years old.

No record has been produced for her, no surname survives, and the story should be read as one the school has carried rather than as history. It is worth keeping anyway, because of what it is: a story about a girl attached to a specific tree in a wood that no longer exists, on ground now occupied by an auditorium full of teenagers.

Generations of pupils have been told her name before they were told anything else about the building.
