The Stickney house at Bull Valley, Illinois was built in the 1800s by a couple with a serious interest in spiritualism, and the architecture reflects it.

The ground floor and the outer perimeter of the building were designed without corners. The reasoning given, then and now, is that a spirit needs a corner to occupy and that a rounded room leaves it nowhere to be.

The upstairs is the only part of the house that has corners.

The family died up there.

Whatever anyone makes of the theory, the building is real, the rounded walls are real, and they were put there deliberately by people who believed what they believed. Figures are described in the upstairs windows after dark.

The house has been restored and has served as a village office and as private property at different times.
