This building at Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin was a boarding house when it was built and is now a saloon and restaurant.

The story everyone tells is about the roses. There were roses painted on the wall. When the new owners bought the place they painted the walls over, and the roses came back through.

There is a plain explanation and it is worth stating: old oil based decoration bleeds through fresh emulsion, and a painter who does not seal it first will watch the pattern reappear over the following weeks. Every decorator has seen it.

It is also true that somebody painted roses on that wall, that they mattered enough for people to notice when they went, and that the building would not let them go.

Chippewa Falls was a lumber town, and a boarding house here housed men who worked the pineries.
