The Scott Mansion

In the 1850s white lumbermen were welcomed to this part of Wisconsin by the local people and their chief. Some time afterwards his daughter Jenny died, and the settlement that became Merrill was named for her. How she died is disputed even locally. One account has her falling in love with a lumberman, becoming pregnant, and taking her own life. Another has her dying in childbirth. A third has her killed by influenza brought in by the newcomers.

Her father buried her on the hill and cursed the ground, saying it would never do any white man any good. That curse is the legend, and everything since has been read through it.

T B Scott bought the land in 1884 to build a house on it. He died unexpectedly in 1886, before it was finished. The count kept locally is that nine people connected to the property died in the years that followed. The house was never completed and was eventually demolished.

What makes the Scott Mansion unusual is that the misfortunes are a matter of record. Only the reason for them is not.
