Scary Dairy is a set of ruined farm buildings near the university at Camarillo, California, on land that belonged to the state hospital.

The institution farmed. Patients worked the land and the dairy, which was standard practice at American state hospitals and was presented as therapy.

What the building actually was is disputed even locally, with people arguing over whether it was a dairy or a slaughterhouse, and that uncertainty has done a great deal of the work in building its reputation.

Murders are rumoured to have taken place there. Nothing supports it and it should not be repeated as fact.

What is certain is that the ruins are heavily graffitied, that they have been a destination for local teenagers for decades, and that the people who lived and died at the hospital next door were patients rather than material for a story.

The site is university property and is posted.
