Turn off Charleston Boulevard onto Sandhill Road in Las Vegas, heading towards Sahara, and you pass a set of flood control tunnels that run under the freeway and come out on a small residential street.

Residents use them as a short cut. Nobody describes it as pleasant, and the accounts from inside them are consistent.

The reality of these tunnels is more remarkable than anything reported in them. Las Vegas is built on desert that floods violently and rarely, and the city runs hundreds of miles of storm drain beneath it. Several hundred people live down there, in a permanent community with furniture, beds and belongings, in tunnels that fill without warning when it rains in the mountains.

People have drowned in them.

Anyone walking through is walking through somebody's home, which is worth knowing before treating it as an attraction.

The tunnels are dangerous and should not be entered.
