The San Gabriel Civic Auditorium in California has a long history and an unusually specific set of stories. When it was built, tunnels were laid the full length of the building so that the owner, known locally as Uncle John, could move from backstage to the foyer without crossing the house.

After he died the tunnels went unused for years. The account that has followed the building ever since holds that during the Depression they were pressed into service as catacombs to hold the dead, and that once full they were sealed. We have not been able to confirm this from any public record and it is presented here as local tradition.

There is one physical detail that keeps it alive. In the men's lavatory at the front of the building there is a door. Open it and there is a brick wall directly behind it. A crew attempting to breach that wall reported getting five feet in and finding still more brick. Sealing a disused tunnel is ordinary. Sealing it with five feet of masonry is not, and that is the question nobody at the auditorium has answered.
