Rutland Heights was a tuberculosis sanatorium in central Massachusetts, and it closed in 1991, leaving eighty eight acres and seventeen buildings behind.

Employees fell to their deaths from the water tower on the site.

The warning that comes with this entry is not atmospheric. The buildings are full of asbestos and lead paint, the floors have been failing for thirty years, and every abandoned institution in this archive carries the same risks.

Rutland was chosen for a sanatorium because it sits on the highest ground in this part of the state, where the air was thought to be best for the lungs. Massachusetts opened it as the first state run tuberculosis hospital in the country.

The site has been largely demolished.
