Riverdale Road runs from north east Denver up to Highway 7 at Brighton, following the west bank of the South Platte and taking its name from the river. It is poorly maintained, curving and rural, and it does not behave like the surveyed roads of the Colorado highway grid. That is because it was not one. The route began as a section of the Trapper or Cherokee Trail, used by the indigenous peoples of the area for something like fifteen hundred years before European contact.

The land between the road and the riverbank is deep alluvial soil, rich enough that the valley carries a long history of settlement. Traditional farming here only began in the late 1880s, and despite the persistent local claims there was never any officially sanctioned slavery on these farms.

What has grown up around the road is one of the densest clusters of legend in Colorado, and much of it is worth separating from the record before it is repeated. What is documented is the age of the route itself, and the number of people who have used it over fifteen centuries.
