Go all the way back along Old Shippensburg Road at Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, opposite the road to the furnace, and the Appalachian Trail runs not far from the parking area.

What walkers report there is sound, and it is unusual. A loud noise from above, described as something like a helicopter, loud enough that you cannot hear the person standing next to you speak.

Pine Grove Furnace was an iron works from the 1700s, worked by charcoal burned from these forests, and the whole landscape here was industrial before it was woodland. The furnace stack is still standing in the state park.

The trail is public and well used, and this section is close to the midpoint of the Appalachian Trail.
