Pike Place Market opened in 1907 on a bluff above Elliott Bay, and it has been continuously in use ever since, which in a city that rebuilt itself as often as Seattle did is unusual. The ground beneath it was Duwamish land long before the first farmer backed a wagon up to the arcade, and the story most often told here begins there.

After the tourists and the shoppers have gone and the stalls are shuttered, a Native woman is described walking the lower levels and the arcade. She is not said to do anything in particular. She is simply there, at home in a place that was hers before it was anyone else's, and the accounts of her are notably gentler than most stories in this archive.

The market's lower floors, a warren of small shops below the main level, hold the other well known story. At a bead shop there, renovation work opened a cavity in a wall and found beads inside it, spanning years, with no way anyone could have reached the space: the only door to it had been painted shut long before the shop opened. A child is described in that part of the market, and staff who worked there came to treat the beads as something that had been placed rather than lost. Come at closing time, when the crowds thin out and the building gets very large and very quiet.
