Schwab Auditorium at Penn State in State College is associated with three separate figures, and unusually, two of them can be named.

One is thought to be Charles Schwab, the steel magnate who paid for the building.

Another is George Atherton, president of the college, who is buried immediately beside it. A grave against the wall of a lecture hall is not a common arrangement and students notice it.

A soldier has also been seen in the auditorium.

The alumni newsletter ran an article on all this, which is a reminder that a university is one of the few institutions that will publish its own ghost stories under its own name.

Schwab himself is worth a note. He rose from stake driver to run Carnegie Steel and then Bethlehem Steel, made one of the great American fortunes, and lost effectively all of it before he died in 1939.
