The art centre in Oshkosh, Wisconsin is a house built during the Depression by a couple who were extremely wealthy in a city where almost nobody was.

They owned the larger factories in Oshkosh, and they paid their employees in vouchers rather than money. The vouchers could be spent at shops the couple also owned. In practice that meant the wages never left their control.

When the people of Oshkosh learned what was being built, the couple were told that if they ever moved into the house, they would be killed.

They took it seriously enough that they did not move in.

The house was finished and stood there, furnished and empty, in a city that had made its position clear. It is now an art centre and gardens open to the public.

That history is the reason anything reported inside it carries weight. This is not a house where something terrible happened. It is a house whose owners were never allowed to live in it, in the middle of the town whose wages had paid for it.
