The Tampa Theatre is an atmospheric picture palace, elaborately decorated inside, and it looks the part before anybody tells you anything.

A young man started work there in the 1940s running the projector. He loved the job and he stayed in it until his death.

Staff hear footsteps.

A projectionist is the most solitary job in a full building. He is in a small hot room above everybody, alone, through every performance, and the audience never sees him. Forty years of that is a life spent in one room watching the backs of people's heads.

The theatre opened in 1926 with a ceiling painted as a night sky, stars that come out, and a Wurlitzer organ that still plays before films.

It is open and showing films.
