This building in Des Moines, Iowa was a cavalry armory, and it is now the city school bus depot.

When the National Guard still occupied it, full time soldiers working after hours reported hearing the clip of hooves off the small drill floor where the stables had been, and the jingle of harness with them.

They also caught sight of things.

The sound is what makes this entry. Horses and harness are not something anybody in a modern building would produce accidentally, and they are not a sound a soldier in the 1980s or 1990s would have heard often enough to imagine.

American cavalry was mounted into the 1940s. Men in this building fed, shod and exercised horses in it as an ordinary part of the working day, and the drill floor was built for that.

The building is in municipal use.
