The house at Henniker, New Hampshire is associated with Mary Wallace, and the descriptions of her are unusually specific: six feet tall, red hair, green eyes, seen at the upstairs windows and on the central staircase. She has also been reported crossing the hills in a coach drawn by four horses.

Mary Wallace was a real person. She was born in 1720 aboard a ship crossing from Ireland, which was taken by pirates, and the story is that the pirate captain spared everyone aboard on condition the newborn was named for his own mother. That much has been in the family record for generations.

The haunting is a different matter. Most of the elaborate lore, the pirate treasure, the buried captain, the coach, was assembled and promoted in the 1930s by an owner who charged admission, and researchers have since taken it apart. Mary never lived in this particular house.

It is privately owned and closed to visitors.
