Ocala National Forest in Marion County, Florida is enormous, and locals simply call it the forest. It holds a great many secluded camp sites, well away from any road.

The accounts come mostly from travelling communities who camp in the back country here for long periods, and they describe hearing children giggling in the dark, affectionately rather than otherwise.

Camps have also been found destroyed, with belongings scattered over a wide area.

Those two reports do not sit easily together, and it is worth saying that Florida black bears are numerous in this forest and will take a camp apart thoroughly for food.

This is the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi and one of the last big stands of sand pine scrub anywhere, with springs, sinkholes and swamp in it. People do get lost here.

The forest is public land and the back country requires preparation.
