Playing the Palace was vaudeville's ultimate dream, and the 1913 theatre is said to have collected more resident spirits than any other Broadway house – rumor counts over a hundred. Most famous is acrobat Louis Borsalino, who plummeted to the stage during a Casting Pearls routine in 1935. On late nights when the auditorium is empty, a figure is said to swing through the rigging above the stage before a long scream echoes and the shape plunges – an eternal replay of the fall. Whoever watches him complete the dive is said to invite misfortune. By a door near the orchestra pit, built specifically for Judy Garland's entrances during her triumphant concert runs, staff sense her presence. A white dress in the mezzanine and a cello-playing figure in the pit round out the house company.
