The Nike site occupies a section of Meshomasic State Forest at Glastonbury, Connecticut. It was a Cold War surface to air missile installation, one of a ring built around American cities, and it has been abandoned for decades.

By daylight it is used for mountain biking and driving, and it is large.

Visitors describe graffiti on the rocks, some of it occult symbols and some of it racist. Both are vandalism rather than evidence of anything, and the second kind says a good deal about who has been coming out here.

The installation itself lies behind several yellow gates.

Abandoned military sites produce a particular kind of story because they were secret while they operated and were left more or less intact when they closed. Underground magazines and launch structures are genuinely dangerous, and most of these sites have been sealed for that reason.
