The beach across from the filling station at Maili on the Waianae coast of Oahu has been used to bury animals since the 1980s.

What people hear there is dogs howling and cats calling.

From the water there is whispering, attributed to people who died on the pier or in the sea.

An animal burial ground is close to unique in this archive. Almost nothing else here concerns anything but people, and a place where a community has been quietly burying its pets for forty years is a real and rather touching thing to have on a beach.

The Waianae coast is the driest and poorest side of the island, and it has the largest Native Hawaiian population and a long history of being where things get put that the rest of Oahu does not want.

The beach is public.
