This house at Hancock, Michigan has had a longer working life than most buildings in this archive. Over a hundred and two years it has been a hospital, a hotel, a doctor's surgery, and finally a fraternity house.

One of the fraternity members fell from the fire escape twenty or thirty years ago and was killed.

What is reported is small and domestic: taps turning on, lights going on and off, doors opening and closing.

No name is set down here. This happened within living memory in a small town in the Copper Country, and the man's family will be known to people there.

Hancock and Houghton sit on either side of a canal in the far north of Michigan, in a district built by Finnish immigrants who came to work the copper mines, which is why the university across the road was what it was.

The house is private student housing.
