The Renaissance castle at Pidhirtsi east of Lviv is counted among Ukraine's most haunted places. According to legend, the ageing magnate Waclaw Rzewuski, in a fit of jealousy, had his nineteen-year-old wife walled up alive in the castle cellars. Ever since, the White Lady appears in its halls and corridors – a pale female figure guarding the spot where she died. Visitors and staff have told of footsteps, cold drafts and silhouettes, and in 2010 a ghost-hunting TV crew recorded unexplained phenomena in the castle.
