Wat Suwannaram in Bangkok Noi served as an execution site for Burmese prisoners of war during the eighteenth-century wars, and its grounds long functioned as a cremation site for the city's dead. Neighbours tell of a headless man wandering the temple precincts, a preta clinging to the bell tower, and a woman who appears by the canal pier at midnight. The temple also houses some of the finest nineteenth-century mural paintings in Thailand, lending the old horror stories a strange frame.
