Pulau Tekong off Singapore's east coast is the country's main military training island, and every new generation of recruits inherits its most famous ghost story. In May 1983 a young recruit went missing during a 16-kilometre route march and was later found dead; soon after, soldiers began hearing his shouts at the assembly ground and seeing a white figure by his old locker. According to the legend, religious leaders were called in and advised the army to cut a third door into the barracks so the restless spirit could leave – and the "three-door bunk" remains the most talked-about spot among Singapore's conscripts, even though the Ministry of Defence has never confirmed it exists.
