Sölvesborg Castle was built in the early 1300s on a headland between the sea and the Ryssberget ridge, where it could control both the sea lane and the land road through Blekinge. It was the heart of the Sölvesborg fief, and from here the king's bailiff at times ruled all of the province. The ruin is the largest medieval castle in present-day Sweden. In the 1520s it was held by the Danish admiral and privateer Sören Norby, one of the most feared sea-warriors of the Baltic. According to a persistent legend he buried a great treasure inside the castle grounds, sealed under copper hatches, before he was forced to flee. Archaeologists have turned the soil. No hatches, no treasure. The thick walls stand in their grass, and the treasure hunters' pits still show in the ground.
