The Bakehouse at Friggesund

One of the houses in the mill village of Friggesund stands where it stands because no one dared stay in it any longer. The building was originally a bakehouse in Svedjebo in Bjuråker, and it was moved here because it was haunted. The cause was an event on the night of 5 February 1899, reported in Sundsvalls Tidning barely a fortnight later. The widow of the farm was up baking through the night with her maid. She sent the girl out on an errand, and when the maid returned she found her mistress dead in the bakehouse. According to the newspaper the cause lay in grief over her son's marriage plans. After that nobody would bake there. The cottage stood empty, was eventually moved to Friggesund and given new uses — first a saddlery, later a tailor's and a shop. The saddlery's sign is still on the wall.
