Rolling Hills Asylum in East Bethany, New York began in 1826 as the Genesee County Poor Farm and housed orphans, widows, the disabled, the mentally ill and minor criminals. The establishment was self-sufficient and even had its own coffin workshop.

A county poor farm took in everyone the nineteenth century had no other answer for: the destitute, the elderly with no family, the mentally ill, unmarried mothers, the disabled and the simply unlucky. Residents worked the farm to pay for their own keep. More than a thousand deaths on the property are documented, and estimates run higher than 1,700; most who died there were buried on the grounds, many in unmarked graves. That number is the entry.

What owners and visitors report is doors slamming, voices and objects moved. Best known are the apparition Hattie and a tall shadow figure.

The site has been worked over heavily by investigators and psychics, and a great deal of what circulates about it comes from that rather than from the people who lived and worked there. The documented mortality record is the part that stands without any of it.

The building is privately owned and run as a destination for paranormal tours; access is by arrangement only.
