Riddle House

The Riddle House was built in 1905 in West Palm Beach, Florida and later moved to the open-air museum Yesteryear Village in Royal Palm Beach. The house was originally a funeral chapel, but in the 1920s Karl Riddle bought it and made it a private residence. In 1995 the house was dismantled and re-erected at the museum in its 1920s condition.

The house is said to be haunted by a spirit named Joseph, an employee of Riddle's who hanged himself in the attic rather than face his financial troubles. His spirit is said to dislike men and has been said to attack them. Visitors and staff describe objects moving by themselves, unexplained sounds and a pervasive sense of unease, particularly in the attic.

Other reports describe a woman in white glimpsed in the upper windows, disembodied voices, footsteps and the sound of chains. Carpenters who worked on the house are said to have found their tools in the mornings thrown from the attic down into the back yard.

The house's haunted reputation was reinforced further when it featured in 2008 on the television programme Ghost Adventures, whose team reported that one of them was pushed and that equipment was thrown about during filming in the attic. Today the Riddle House is one of southern Florida's most visited haunted sites — a time capsule from the 1920s with a spirit that refuses to leave its attic.
