The Teatro Lethes in Faro began life as a Jesuit college in 1605 and opened as a theatre in 1845 – the Algarve's little jewel of a stage. Its most famous legend concerns a ballerina said to have hanged herself on stage, driven by exhaustion or unrequited love, depending on who tells it. At night, when all is silent, her footsteps are said to echo across the empty boards. As if that were not enough, the remains of a French soldier were found walled up in the building, and he too is said to be bound to the theatre forever.
