The Palácio de Valenças in central Sintra was once the residence of the Counts of Valenças and today houses the town's historical archive. A maid named Palmira secretly loved her master the count – and when she realised her love would never be returned, she took her own life. Staff and visitors report creaking floorboards, whistling sounds and a weeping woman's voice drifting through empty rooms. The fact that the building is also said to have served as a slaughterhouse until 1859 hardly makes the story less unsettling.
