The A Voz do Operário building in Lisbon's São Vicente district houses the school and newspaper founded in 1879 by tobacco worker Custódio Gomes, after the establishment press turned its back on the workers. He is said never to have let go of his life's work: at night, the curtains in the function hall are reportedly drawn open and windows swing wide without explanation. According to those who work there, the phenomena only occur when the corridors are empty – as if the founder were still doing his rounds. An unusually benign haunting in the heart of old Lisbon.
