Preston Castle in Ione is one of the oldest reform schools in the United States, its foundation stone laid in 1890 and its doors opened in 1894. The building is regarded as the finest example of Romanesque Revival architecture in the Mother Lode gold country and was abandoned in 1960. The haunting centres on Anna Corbin, the housekeeping matron, who was beaten to death in a locked room on 23 February 1950 in a murder that was never solved. Her spirit is the most frequently reported apparition. The site has featured in programmes such as Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters.
