On Szeroka street in Kazimierz stand the Remuh synagogue and the sixteenth-century cemetery where Rabbi Moses Isserles, known as Remu, is buried. Beside it lies a small fenced patch of grass that Kazimierz has told stories about for generations. In a house on that exact spot, the tale goes, the orphan Chana married the baker Dawid on a Friday evening. The rabbi reminded the guests that the sabbath had begun at sunset and that the celebration had to fall silent, but the dancing carried on deep into the night. The earth is said to have opened and swallowed the house with every wedding guest inside it, and the plot of grass is their grave. In Kazimierz the story is told as a lesson about the weight of the sabbath.
