The Katownia and Prison Tower on Długa Street served for centuries as Gdańsk's jail, torture chamber and executioner's residence. Tradition has it that prisoners who refused to confess were locked overnight in the 'Chamber of Mourning' – and after a night among the whispers of the dead, they usually talked. Two executed men are said to appear there as white figures with hangman's nooses at their throats. In recent years the building has even been visited by an exorcist, and museum staff have told of objects moving on their own in the old cells.
