The narrow cobbled alley between the cathedral and the old town hall is called Pirates Alley, but despite the name there is no evidence that pirates ever frequented it. The name dates from the twentieth century, pure romance. What is true, on the other hand, is that the young William Faulkner lived at number 624 in 1925 and wrote his first novel there. Today the house is a small bookshop.

The staff sometimes say that Faulkner's spirit remains, smoking a pipe, but that is more a literary declaration of love than an actual ghost report. Stop a while all the same in the cramped alley, where the damp gleams on the cobbles and the cathedral's shadow falls across you. New Orleans is a city built as much from its stories as from its bricks, and in an alley like this one, named after pirates who never existed, that is more apparent than anywhere else.
