Singha Durbar in Kathmandu was built in 1908 as the lavish residence of the Rana prime ministers and was once counted as Asia's largest private palace. Today it houses Nepal's government and parliament – along with persistent tales that one of the old Rana generals never moved out. Officials working late speak of lights switching off and on, cold drafts in the corridors and an inescapable feeling of being watched. A fire ravaged the palace in 1973, but both the building and its ghost stories live on.
