The Rosenkrantz Tower, Bergen

The way up to Norway's finest Renaissance rooms passes through the cellar, and it is the cellar people remember. There lies the fangehull, a space about four metres by one with just enough headroom to stand and almost no light at all, only a narrow air slit. It was probably made in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century and was in use well into the 1800s. Prisoners considered particularly dangerous and drawn from the bottom of society were put here; those who ended up in it generally had corporal punishment or execution ahead of them. It is in precisely this part of the tower that visitors report experiences which in Bergen are attributed to gjenferd og fortapte sjeler — the prisoners who died in the hole. No figure has been given a name. The tower itself goes back to the 1270s and was rebuilt as a residence by the governor Erik Ottesen Rosenkrantz in the 1560s.
