Hamar was a Norwegian bishop's seat from the 1100s, and the cathedral on the headland in Lake Mjøsa was among the country's largest. The Hamar Chronicle, written down in the 1500s, describes the city's fall with portents out of legend: by its account all the church bells and the organ began to sound by themselves at midnight, the nave grew as bright as day, bells rang in the monastery too, and in the bishop's residence came noises like two armies fighting. The omens were read afterwards as foretelling the seizure of Mogens Lauritssøn, Norway's last Catholic bishop, when Christian III forced through the Reformation in the spring of 1537. He died in captivity in Denmark in 1542. Swedish troops then shot the cathedral into ruin in 1567, and it stands today under a glass shell on Domkirkeodden – a stone skeleton beneath a roof of glass.
