The Gevangenpoort in the heart of The Hague served as the prison of the Court of Holland from around 1420 until 1828; some ten thousand prisoners were held here, and torture was part of the judicial routine. The museum is often called the most haunted in the Netherlands: staff tell of a man in a black hooded cloak near the small office and of a limping boy who wanders through the cell block. Cell doors fastened with zip ties have been found standing open in the morning, the ties snapped on the floor. A sceptical investigation found no ghosts, however – visitors may judge for themselves among the pillories and thumbscrews.
