Deep in the fog forest above Mexico City, the Carmelite order built a monastery for total seclusion and penance in the early 1600s. Legend has it that monks who broke the order's severe rules were locked into the monastery's tunnels, in absolute darkness, until their minds gave way. Visitors today describe chanting voices, prayers and laments in the corridors, chairs shifting in the kitchen and lights switching on and off by themselves. The monastery is now a museum in the Desierto de los Leones national park, where weekly night tours with monk-costumed actors retell its legends.
