On the Bock promontory, Count Sigfried founded in 963 the castle that became the birthplace of Luxembourg City, and miles of casemates still tunnel through the rock. According to the city's best-loved legend, Sigfried's wife Melusina was a mermaid who demanded to be left undisturbed one day and night each week. When the count finally peered through the keyhole and saw her fish's tail in the bath, she vanished that instant into the river Alzette. She is said to return every seven years in human form above the rock, calling on passers-by to break her enchantment — so far in vain, and each time the white figure sinks back into the stone crying that she must wait another seven years.
