Changgyeonggung in Seoul is perhaps the most ill-fated of the Joseon dynasty's palaces. By the queen's residence Tongmyeongjeon, the royal concubine Jang Huibin in the 1690s buried dead animals and cursed objects to kill Queen Inhyeon – a sorcery scandal that ended with Jang being forced to drink poison. The kingdom's official annals also describe outright poltergeist outbreaks at the same hall: stones flying through the air, clothes bursting into flame, and court ladies having their hair cut off by invisible hands. It was here, too, that Crown Prince Sado starved to death, locked in a rice chest on his own father's orders. Today the palace is a peaceful park, but evening tours still dwell on the shadows around Tongmyeongjeon.
